A little information about Sarah...
Sarah's
birth was premature, and followed by several medical complications,
as well as delayed milestones. She didn't sit up until the age of 6-7
months, and couldn't walk until the age of 2...and that was just to
run, because when she slowed down to walk, she would lose her balance.
She has always been a very happy child, with quite an imagination and
lots of creativity. Entertaining herself seems to come natural to her.
With such an outgoing personality, she made friends very easily....until
around the age of 9 years, when it started to become obvious to children
around her that she was 'different' from them.
Sarah currently processes information on the mental age level of a
5 year old, and therefore does not function well academically. Nor does
she possess a sense of danger that one normally has developed as part
of the 'growing-up' process. Therefore she has to be under constant
supervision during even the simplest of events. She has been thoroughly
examined throughout the years by specialists in various fields of expertise,
in an ongoing effort to determine her exact medical conditions, but
without success. The only official diagnosis' that have been handed
down are "ADHD" (Attention Deficit w/Hyperactivity Disorder),
"Moderately Mentally Impaired" and "Learning Disabled".
But as a mother, it's simply not enough to put a name to her condition.
I had to find a way to help her. But most importantly....I had to find
a way to help myself to accept her limitations, while at the
same time trying to find options and treatments available to improve
her condition.
If you've found this website, then you've probably already searched
enough of the internet to realize how difficult it is to get answers,
help, and support. This was the same situation I found myself in, and
when I finally compiled a list of names and numbers, I felt it was my
duty as a concerned parent to share the information with everyone else
out there that needs it. I have dedicated years to gathering
this information, and I hope that it is of benefit to all who visit
this site. I will continue to update this site with new content as it
becomes available. Meanwhile, if there's a specific organization, subject,
or disability that you need to find information about, please e-mail
me directly and I will be happy to help you.
